Blocking spam
We all dislike adverts cluttering up websites. This file below is a collection of known junk advert sites that push banner adverts and animated gifs to your web browser.
If you put this into the end of your hosts file, it effectively
sets spammers to resolve to 127.0.0.1
, meaning that spam sites
embedded in websites effectively point to your computer instead of the spammer.
Since your computer doesn't have the advert, or answer http requests anyway,
it will respond with a dropped connection or 404, and thus
stop these sites from sending you adverts.
Note however that this method does NOT stop adverts inside videos on YouTube. It just stops inline ads on websites.
It should in theory be undetectable to ad blockers, so you should be able to remove your ad blocker and rely entirely on this to eliminate most ads.
